    Akhaltskha’s Mariam Harutyunyan becomes Armenia’s best student
    The RA Ministry of Education and Science summed up the results of its Best Student nation-wide competition yesterday.

    RA Minister of Education and Science Levon Mkrtchyan greeted the students and granted their awards. The annual competition also serves as a way for the government to reveal and encourage the best students and help them grow as professionals.

    The students passed two stages. The first was held within universities. Each university had submitted to the RA Ministry of Education and Science the documents of the winner of the first stage from the Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree Programs, according to spheres.

    The second stage was held by a commission established upon the executive order of the RA Minister of Education and Science. The competition was held in the following areas: natural science, medicine, humanities, social studies, engineering, Armenology, culture/sports.

    To win the competition, the students of various universities had to not only have outstanding performance and be socially active, but also be involved in academics.

    This year, there were participants from 18 universities.     Akhaltskha celebrated St. Sarkis the Warrior Day
    On February 11, the Armenian Apostolic Church is celebrating the day of Saint Sarkis the Warrior, His Son, Mardiros and the 14 soldiers.

    Every year, the faithful of Akhaltskha region travel nearly 4 kilometers to visit the St. Sarkis the Warrior Chapel, which is located next to the Holy Cross Church in Sazel village. The holiday is especially a joyful holiday for young Armenians who very often head towards the St. Sarkis the Warrior Chapel in groups and with their classmates, and this has been a folk ritual in Akhaltskha for a long time now.

    On the occasion, a Holy Mass was served, and the celebrant was pastor of Akhaltskha and the nearby villages, Fr. Priest Torgom Vardanyan at Holy Cross Church in the Sazel village of Akhaltskha.

    His Holiness and Fr. Torgom interpreted the symbol of the day for the faithful and congratulated them.

    At the end of the Holy Mass, Spiritual Superintendent of Akhaltskha, Fr. Friar Hakob Sahakyan and the celebrant performed the blessing of youth.

    Lebanese-Armenians recently visited the House-Museum of Jivani in Kartsakh. During their visit, they mentioned the following: “We were very impressed with the museum in Kartsakh where the items were sorted properly, interestingly and meticulously. The life of Jivani was presented in a very interesting way. We received great explanations and got to know Jivani up close. We hope many people visit this museum,” writes javakhkmedia.com.

    The guests left with great impressions and promised to return with a larger group in the spring.

    Vardges Surenyants’s house in Akhaltskha on sale
    The house of great Armenian painter Vardges Surenyants in Akhaltskha is on sale. According to the homeowner, he has preserved the former look of Vardges Surenyants’s house and has not renovated it since he still believes there will be people who will want to purchase Surenyants’s house and turn it into a museum.

    Vardges Surenyants’s house has five medium-size rooms and a small garden in the back of the house. Currently, the house is on sale for $90,000 dollars.

    On August 1, 2009, a plaque dedicated to the memory of great Armenian painter Vardges Surenyants was unveiled on the wall of the painter’s house in Akhaltskha.

    The event dedicated to the painter’s 150th birth anniversary and the unveiling of the plaque were organized by businessman Sos Sahakyan, who lives in Armenia and is originally from Akhaltskha.

    Vardges Surenyants was born in 1860 to a family of a clergyman in Akhaltskha. He received his primary education at the Lazaryan College, after which he continued his studies in the department of architecture of the highly reputable school for painting, sculpting and architecture in Moscow. He started pursuing his career as a painter at the imperial academy in Munich.

    Knowing ten languages, Surenyants also studied the arts and literature of different nations. According to his contemporaries, he would recite the poems of Persian poets Hafez and Khayam, translate the works of William Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde,...

    Representatives of the city council of Akhaltskha participated in the discussion on the city’s budget for the year 2017. Among the representatives of Armenia organizations were the founder of the Democratic Union of Nations of Georgia Ashot Kavaleryan and Director of the Media Analysis Center of Samtskhe-Javakhk Eduard Ayvazyan.

    The discussion began with a speech by Head of the Sacrebulo of Akhaltskha Davit Lomidze. “The regional development foundation has allocated 2,250,000 Laris and has distributed the funds to solve issues in various sectors, including infrastructure projects and social programs. As far as the sacrebulo’s budget is concerned, we reduced it by 126,000 Laris and immediately allocated it for the implementation of infrastructural projects,” head of the city council Davit Lomidze.

    After being introduced to the draft of the city’s budget, the participants of the meeting expressed their views on the budget. The attendees said it would be nice, if the city solved the issues related to stray dogs, public restrooms, the renovation of the local cultural center, public transportation and the wrongly placed road signs.

    According to Davit Lomidze, the budget for the year 2017 in Akhaltskha will make up nearly 7,900,000 Laris. According to the draft, administrative expenditures have been reduced by 798,200 Laris.

The Support to Javakhk Foundation established its representation in Georgia on July 25.

The opening of the office was preceded by the groundbreaking ceremony for the Home-Museum of Jivani in Kartsakh. Both ceremonies were attended by several guests from all parts of Samtskhe-Javakhk, as well as Tbilisi and Armenia.

“The generations are fulfilling their duty to Jivani today. I believe Jivani is happy and emotional in the heavens today,” Executive Director of the Support to Javakhk Foundation Ashot Hakobyan said during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Home-Museum of Jivani.

As mentioned during the opening of the Support to Javakhk Foundation’s representation, the mission of the Support to Javakhk Foundation is to contribute to the development of social life of the Armenians of Samtskhe-Javakhk and Tsalka region in different spheres and the Georgian-Armenian cooperation.

According to the Support to Javakhk Foundation’s leaders, the opening of the representation is a step forward and will help the Foundation make tangible progress in a short amount of time.

The Javakhk Camp Program was launched at the Youth Educational and Cultural Center of Ninotsminda on July 13. The program is being carried out with the support of the Armenian Relief Society.

The Javakhk Camp Program is being held at the Youth Educational and Cultural Center of Ninotsminda for the first time and will go on to become a traditional event at the Center. The six-day program has brought together 80 boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 16.

Young Armenian Americans will teach Armenian songs and dances and will give lessons on arts and painting. There will also be English language courses, as well as courses on a healthy lifestyle and notable people of Javakhk.

The campers will also participate in athletic and entertaining games. The Javakhk Camp Program will end with a final event.

According to the plan, lights will be switched on in the Gandza, Heshtia, Satkha, Big Aragyal, Big Khanchali, Jigrashen and Spasovka villages.

The construction project is being carried out by Magni Plus construction firm.

On June 15, 2015, a group of young Armenian volunteers were involved in clean-up works, at the initiative of the Director of the Hayartun Center, Levon Chidilyan and the Director of the Youth Department of the Diocese, Valery Badalyan.

Volunteers attended the commemorative service delivered in the morning by Rev. Frs. Ter Samvel Torosyan and Ter Narek Ghushchyan in the Saint Etchmiadzin Church, Tbilisi. Then they headed to the Heroes Square and Laguna Vere territory to help clean up the roads with spades and other necessary equipment. After working all day, young volunteers expressed readiness to participate in providing humanitarian assistance.

Heavy flooding in Tbilisi on June 14, 2015, has killed at least 15 people. Among the victims 4 Armenians – Lianna, Zhanna and Svetlana Eghiazarovas and Nana Tilishvili-Eghiazarova; 9 people are still missing. A total of 24 families are left without shelter. Rescue operations are under way.

Today is a great holiday for all Armenians around the world. May 28th is celebrated as the day of the First Republic of Armenia. Winning the Turkish army in the Battle of Sardarapat on 26 May 1918, the Armenian troops manage to suspend the full elimination of Armenia under the leadership of freedom fighters.

On May 28th, the National Council of Armenia declares the First Republic of Armenia. Hovhannes Kajaznuni is appointed the first Prime Minister of the independent Armenia, and Yerevan is the capital of Armenia.

Although the First Republic was short-lived and ceased to exist on 2 December 1920, Armenia’s declaration of independence was of great historical significance for the Armenian nation. Seeing a free, independent and prosperous Armenia was the centuries-old dream of all Armenians.

During the event dedicated to the First Republic of Armenia, members of the youth center of Akhalkalak expressed their congratulatory remarks and glorified the heroes who sacrificed their lives for Armenia’s independence.

The event began with a play presenting the unwavering struggle of the Armenian people. The actors waved the Armenian tricolor flag, after which they performed songs and dances, keeping the audience at the cultural center in a festive mood.

Residents of the Armenian Tabatsghuri village of Borjomi region are asking for help. The lake serves as the only source of income for the villagers, even though it has been under the direction of a private owner for the past five years. The locals say they can’t use the major resource and that this has worsened their economic situation. The residents of Tabatsghuri are asking the central authorities to annul the owner’s licensing and allow the residents to fish.

As director of Lakes Ltd. Alikha Muradean mentioned, the locals will be granted the right to fish according to the law only if they give the owner 50% of the fish that they get, but the villagers don’t agree.

The residents of the village say they’ll leave the village in case the issue remains unsolved.

The lake of Tabatsghuri is a lake that doesn’t flow and is located in the north of the highland of Javakhk at an altitude of 1991 meters at the southwestern foot of the Trialeti mountain chain. It is volcanic. The lake is 6.5 km long, has a maximum width of 4.5 km and is up to 40.2 meters deep. It’s nourished mainly underground, and people fish there.

The lake has an unimaginable beauty and is considered one of the wonders of Javakhk.

On April 23 at 19:00, at the initiative of the young teachers of the school in Kulikam village of Javakhk, the youth and schoolchildren of the village came together and participated in a torch-lit march commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

With signs and the national flags of Georgia and Armenia, the youth and schoolchildren moved from the recently unveiled cross-stone towards the local church where the bells rang 100 times at 19:15 and the Turkish flag was burned. The participants of the march said a prayer at the church, after which some headed towards Akhalkalak to take part in the torch-lit march there.

Starting from 21:00, the youth burned more than 200 wheels with the number “100” written on them at the peak of a high mountain as a sign of the centuries-old history of the Armenian people following the Armenian Genocide…

On April 18, a cross-stone dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide was placed in Khando village of Akhalkalak region and consecrated by Vicar of the General Prelacy of Javakhk, Father Babken Salbiyan.

The cross-stone was unveiled during a ceremony attended by Members of Parliament of Georgia and Armenia, representatives of the local authorities, public and political figures, intellectuals and several other guests.

Among the speakers were Georgian MP Samvel Petrosyan, Armenian MP Vardan Ayvazyan, historian and academician Ashot Melkonyan, President of the Board of Trustees of the Support to Javakhk Foundation Sos Sahakyan, President of the Sakrebulo of Akhalkalak Hamlet Movsisyan and others.

After the cross-stone was unveiled, the youth of the village organized an event dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide for all the attending guests.
